Where to start as a filmmaker

Where to start as a filmmaker can be overwhelming.

The average indie filmmaker finds themselves wondering where to start. They often agonize over the resources that they lack. However, the key is to ignore all of that and start anyway.

When I first decided I wanted to be a filmmaker, I remember the challenges I had. I wasn’t from wealthy parents, nor did I have any connections, equipment, or outlets to create a movie. Even more challenging, the year was 1996, and hardly any serious filmmaker was using video. Video was all that I could gain access to living 5 hours from Los Angeles.

I also remember the time I found out that my student aid had fallen through at the art school I had been accepted to in San Francisco. I can remember the feeling of failure that swept over me as I sat on the Southwest jet waiting to take off back to Las Vegas where I lived. It was at that moment that I decided that I wouldn’t let anything stop me from achieving my goal as a filmmaker.

In today’s video, I want to share a little insight on my story and how you can create forward movement for yourself as an independent filmmaker.
